Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 ripe avocado, mashed
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
  • 4 whole wheat burger buns
  • 1 cup lettuce leaves
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 1/2 cup sliced pickles (optional)
  • Olive oil for grilling

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey and the mashed avocado.
  2. Add the breadcrumbs to the mixture.
  3. Add the finely chopped red onion and minced garlic.
  4. Pour in the Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Sprinkle in the smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  6. If using cilantro, add it now and mix everything together gently with your hands until just combined.
  7. Divide the mixture into four equal portions.
  8. Shape each portion into a patty about 3/4 inch thick, making a slight indentation in the center of each patty.
  9. Place the patties on a plate or a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  10. Heat a grill or a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  11. Once hot, carefully place the patties on the grill or skillet.
  12. Cook the burgers for about 5-6 minutes on the first side without pressing down on them.
  13. Flip the burgers gently using a spatula and cook for an additional 5-6 minutes on the other side until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).
  14. If desired, add a slice of cheese on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking and cover to help it melt.
  15. While the burgers are cooking, prepare the burger buns by toasting them lightly.
  16. Once cooked, remove the burgers from the heat and let them rest for a couple of minutes.
  17. To assemble, start with the bottom half of the burger bun and place a lettuce leaf on it.
  18. Add the turkey burger patty on top of the lettuce.
  19. Top with a slice of tomato and any additional toppings like sliced pickles or extra avocado.
  20. Finally, place the top half of the bun on the burger and serve.

Notes

  • Feel free to customize the toppings based on your preferences. Other great additions include sliced onions, jalapeños, or different types of cheese.
  • These burgers can also be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to a day before cooking.
